I'm shopping for a new kit. I want to go from power sizes Yam MCs with 22 kick to standard sized smaller toms and 20" kick. I want to lower everything and keep it smaller. I tried the new Yam lines, but they are still SO expensive.
I also tried a maple Spaun kit with an awesome 20"x20" kick. 14 " tom had more low end than a 16". I didn't like the snare on the kit though. It had two huge venting holes in the shell that worsen the sound IMO. But I know they have a large selection of other snare. They were less pricey than Yamaha's. I'm really interested by them.
Do they use Keller shells, and if so is it a good or bad thing? I always hear: Small custom shops just use Keller shells and put overseas hardware! So what's the difference between all of them? Are Keller shells good?

I know they claim that their double-sided 45o edges make all the difference because this way the edge touches the flat surface of the head and not the collar.

Anyway, any opins?

Sound holes are like bass ports on a speaker, they add a funky low mid honking tone to a snare. Avoid them, unless you worship Travis B. And I'd bet he doesn't record with them.

Keller shells are perfectly fine. They've made shells for all the boutique companies and were DW's choice before they started making their own.

Spaun are small but reasonably priced, and put out a product as good as anyone's. Their z series is a bargain and sounds very good.

Keller makes great shells. I think those GMS drums that Nathan Townsley was using at MD are Kellers. Check out his video at drummerworld.com
